Retrofit & replace

Motorizing existing shades: retrofit or replace?

You don't always have to start over. Sometimes existing shades can be motorized; sometimes a clean replacement is the better investment. Here's how to tell.

When a retrofit makes sense

If your existing shades are in good condition and a compatible tube/roller, a retrofit motor (often rechargeable-battery, so no wall-opening) can automate them without a full replacement — the easiest, least-disruptive path. Some systems even offer retrofit upgrade kits designed to drop into existing rollers.

When replacing is the smarter call

Retrofit isn't always worth it. If the fabric is dated or failing, the hardware is worn, the shades are oversized/heavy (retrofit battery motors have torque limits), or you want a specific look, wiring, or smart-home integration, a purpose-built new system usually lands better and lasts longer. Forcing a motor onto the wrong shade creates noise, sag and early failure.

How we decide with you

We look at the existing tube and hardware, fabric condition, size and weight, and how you want to control it — then recommend retrofit or replace honestly, even when replace is the smaller job. Battery retrofit for a quick win; a new system when the project deserves it.

Frequently asked

Can any shade be motorized?

No — it depends on the tube/roller, size and weight, and fabric condition. Many can be retrofitted (often with a battery motor); some are better replaced. We assess yours before recommending.

Do retrofit motors need wiring?

Usually not — retrofit motors are commonly rechargeable-battery, so there's no wall-opening. That's a big part of their appeal for existing homes.
