Drapery & motorized tracks
Drapery that opens itself, on a track.
Motorized drapery is the piece of a house that people notice without knowing why. A wall of panels drawing back together at eight in the morning changes a room more than any shade does — and mechanically it is a very different product from a shade, because the fabric travels sideways along a track rather than up and down on a tube.
How a motorized track works
The panels hang from carriers that run inside a track. A motor at one end drives a belt or cord that pulls a lead carrier along, and the rest of the panel follows it — so the drapery glides at a steady, controlled pace rather than being dragged by hand. Tracks are configured as a centre-open pair or a one-way draw, and curved or bay runs are built to the shape of the wall.
Because the motor is doing the pulling, the fabric is never handled. That is quietly the biggest practical benefit: no leading edge getting grubby, no panel tugged off its hooks, no reaching behind a sofa.
Headings that suit a powered track
The heading — how the fabric is gathered at the top — controls how the panels stack and how evenly they travel. On a motorized track, headings that hold a consistent, repeating fold behave best, because every fold moves the same distance every time.
- Ripplefold, or wave — an even, continuous S-curve that stacks tightly and travels predictably; the usual choice on a powered track
- Pinch pleat — a more traditional, tailored gather; suits a formal room, with a deeper stack
- Grommet and rod-pocket headings — designed for a rod, so they are generally a manual proposition rather than a tracked one
Power: rechargeable or hardwired
In a finished home the default is a rechargeable motor, because it needs no wall opened up and no electrician — it is the reason retrofitting motorized drapery into an existing room is realistic at all.
On a build or a renovation with the walls open, we specify hardwired power instead and plan the runs before the drywall goes on. Drapery motors move more mass than a shade motor, so where a project can be hardwired, it usually should be.
Layering drapery with a shade
Drapery and shades are not alternatives, they are layers with different jobs. The shade at the glass handles heat, glare and daytime privacy; the drapery outside it handles softness, acoustics, the height of the room and the closed-in feeling at night.
The layered version is also the practical answer to a bedroom that has to be dark: a blackout shade in the reveal to kill the light at the glass, panels over it to close the edges. Both can run on the same scene, so one command settles the room.
Fabric, measuring and installation
Drapery fabric is confirmed with you against physical samples rather than a screen, because weight and drape decide how a panel hangs and neither survives a photograph. Fullness, panel count and finished length are set from measurements taken in the room — ceiling height, floor level, where the track can actually be fixed.
At install the track is set level to the ceiling, not to the window, the panels are dressed into their folds, and the motor's open and closed limits are calibrated on site so the panels stop exactly where they should.
Frequently asked
Can my existing drapery go on a motorized track?
Sometimes. It depends on the heading, the fullness and the finished length, since the panels have to hang from carriers and travel evenly. We assess the existing panels at the consultation and tell you honestly whether they will work or whether new panels are the better outcome.
How is a motorized drapery track powered?
A rechargeable motor is the default in a finished home, because nothing needs to be opened up. On new construction or a renovation with the walls open, we specify hardwired power and plan the runs in advance.
Can motorized drapery run on a schedule or by voice?
Yes — the same scene and schedule control we use for motorized shades applies to the track, so drapery and shades can move together on one command. Which platforms fit your home is confirmed against your actual hub and network.
