Plantation shutters
Plantation shutters, built to the opening.
A plantation shutter is the only treatment on this list that becomes part of the architecture. It is built to the shape of your opening, hung in a frame, and stays there — so it is judged less like a window covering and more like joinery, and it is measured that way.
Two controls, not one
Every fabric shade has a single control: how far down it is. A shutter has two independent ones — the panels swing, and the louvers tilt within them. That is why shutters solve the situation nothing else quite does: full daylight bounced up at the ceiling while the sightline into the room from the street stays closed.
It also changes how the treatment behaves at night. Closed louvers give privacy without the room going dark and without anything having to be pulled down, so a shutter is often the calmer answer in a front-facing bedroom or a bathroom.
Real wood or composite
We fit shutters in real wood and in composite. Wood is the lighter of the two and takes a paint or stain finish with a depth composite cannot quite match, which is why it suits living spaces and formal rooms.
Composite is the humidity answer. In bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and rooms that open onto a lanai — anywhere the air is damp for long stretches or salt is in the air — a composite louver is the more stable choice over years, and that is what we specify for the coast.
Openings that suit a shutter
Because the frame is made to the opening, shutters go places a rolling product struggles. Sliding glass doors take bypass or bi-fold panel arrangements that track alongside the door. Tall windows are usually split with a divider rail so the top and bottom halves tilt independently. Bay windows, sidelights and awkward reveals are all built to shape.
The reverse is also true: shutters need depth to sit in and space for the panels to swing. A shallow reveal or a window with handles in the way changes the mount, and occasionally the recommendation. That is a measuring conversation, not a catalogue one.
Shutters are operated by hand — and what that means for automation
On the shutters we fit, louvers are tilted by hand; motorized tilt is not something we currently offer, and we would rather say that plainly than sell an automated story.
In practice that rarely limits a home. Where you want scheduled or voice control, it goes on the shades and drapery — motorized rollers on the sun-facing glass, shutters where the architecture and the everyday privacy call for them. Most projects we plan end up as a deliberate mix.
Measuring, making and hanging shutters
Shutters are measured to the opening rather than to a nominal window size: square, plumb and depth are all checked, panel splits and hinge sides are decided in the room, and the frame style follows the reveal you actually have. Get that wrong and no amount of adjustment at install saves it.
Upkeep is genuinely low — a dust or a wipe along the louvers — which is part of why they suit the rooms they suit. Because each panel is built to its opening, the fit is checked again at installation and the louver tension is set in the room so every panel moves the same way.
Frequently asked
Can plantation shutters be motorized?
Not on the shutters we currently fit — louvers are tilted by hand. Where you want scheduled or voice control in the same home, we put it on the shades and drapery and plan the two together; ask at the consultation if motorized tilt matters to you.
Do shutters work on sliding glass doors?
Yes, using bypass or bi-fold panel arrangements that track alongside the door. Which one suits depends on the door's width, the direction it opens and the wall beside it, so we settle that in the room.
Wood or composite for a bathroom?
Composite. It is the more stable choice where the air stays damp for long stretches, which is why we specify it for bathrooms, laundries and rooms that open onto a lanai. Real wood is better placed in conditioned living spaces.
